Wilkes Co. cattlemen kick off Beef Month with Saturday's Cowboy Cook-Off and fun events

The Wilkes County Cattlemen's Association sponsored a Beef Month Kick-Off Expo Saturday on The Square featuring a Cowboy Cook- Off with fivelocal teams competing.

First place was taken by the Washington Wilkes FFA, led by advisor Tony White, and included Trent Martin and Kelsey Meeks. Their "Creole Marinated Flat-Iron Steak" was the top choice of judges Sam Moore, Chairman of the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners; Julie Watson, Georgia Beef Board; and Ron Ward, Regional Vice President for Georgia Cattlemen's Association.

Salt Lick Barbecue Sirloin of Dr. Tracy Williams and Kim White took second place honors, while Carol Jackson's Ribeye Steaks with Blue Cheese Butter and Mushrooms took third.

As the rain finally pours down, Cook-Off contestants applaud the winning team of Washington-Wilkes FFA, led by Tony White, center, at Saturday's Wilkes Cattlemen's Association Expo on The Square.
The team of Tink's Grass-fed Beef and LaFayette Manor Inn took honors for the best theme-based cook site, along with an honorable mention for their beef dish. Charlie Burgess' entry also took an honorable mention.

Three young ladies participated in the Little Cowgirl Contest: Shelby White, Rebecca Pendrey, and Katie Pendrey.

"This is our second Beef Cook- Off, and the Wilkes County Cattlemen's Association would like to give a special thanks to several people," Jeff Pendrey said. "Thanks to Bradley Barber of the Washington Farmer's Market for providing tents to some of our participants during the rain, and to McDonalds for providing gift bags for the children, to Tony White for helping to organize the event.

"We also thank Southern States for providing feed, calf milk, corral panels, games, and gifts for the children, Julie Watson of the Georgia Beef Board for providing games and information, Frank and Carol Jackson, Lauren Chafin,and Dennis and Laurie Dehil for providing live cattle on-site, to our judges of the Cowboy Cook-Off, and to all the members of the Wilkes County Cattlemen's Association who volunteered their time, talents, and efforts to help make this a success for all."
