Wilkes Relay for Life raises $49K with 'awesome' volunteers, teams

The Survivors' Lap opened the very successful 2007 Wilkes County Relay for Life, which brought in more than $49,000 to fight cancer and help cancer survivors.
The final totals on the 2007 Wilkes County Relay for Life are in, and they are spectacular.

"This is absolutely awesome," said Summer Garrison, community manager for the American Cancer Society. "We've raised $49,038.47, some $14,000 over our goal for this year."

Wilkes Relay teams met Tuesday night to celebrate success and receive awards. The numbers reflecta tremendous increase in every area - 25 teams, up from 20 last year; 138 participating survivors, up from last year's 65; corporate sponsorship was up to $11,500 from $8,300 in 2006.

"We went way above every goal we set," Garrison said.

In team standings for most money raised, first place was taken by the team from the Episcopal Church of the Mediator. The Little River Methodist Charge Aloha team took second-place honors, and the Regions Bank team took third.

The Church of the Year award went to Springfield Baptist, and the Rookie Team of the Year was a tie between Jo and Buzzy Randall's Georgia Peaches and Peanuts, and the team from St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

The "Pack the Track" award for number of survivors was a tie between the team from Twin Oak Baptist Church and the Little River Aloha team. The "Ruler of the Schoolyard" award went to the Key Club at W-WCHS.

Garrison attributes the successful fourth Wilkes Relay for Life to a hard-working committee and outstanding publicity. "Cathy Lannae's articles on local cancer survivors put a familiar face on cancer, and I know that made a big difference."

Even with Relay for Life chair Amy Treadwell deployed to support firefightingin south Georgia for weeks prior to the event, the local committee made it work. "Everybody stepped up and worked to make it bigger and better," Garrison said. "I can't wait to see what Wilkes County does next year."
