N. Alexander school getting good response on fund-raising campaign for new windows

The North Alexander School Association (NASA) has reported an encouraging response to its initial campaign to raise funds to restore the windows in the old city school building in Washington. The kickoff to the campaign began with a tour of the long-shuttered building on the afternoon of April 29. Response was impressive.

Bill Bennett, current NASA chairman, said that about 50 people toured the ground floor of the building and several signed up with pledges or donations on the spot. To date, NASA has received 14 donations of $500 each, pledges for another $1,000, and numerous smaller donations for this project. There are about 110 windows in the structure, with 40 on the ground floor.

"We want to show potential donors that we intend to use their gifts as soon as possible, and renovations are already underway," Bennett said. "So far we have fully restored six windows on the southwestern corner of the ground floor. We urge everyone interested to ride by and notice how much better it already looks!"

NASA will recognize donations for the project with small brass plaques attached to the wooden sash of the windows.

"These plaques will be engraved with the names of the donors, or as memorials, as the donor directs. While small and discreet, this recognition will endure for a very long time since the plaques can be removed and re-installed whenever the windows need painting." Bennett explained.

Gifts to NASA for this purpose also will qualify for equal matching from the $200,000 "challenge" grant previously reported. For more information, call Bennett at 706-678-1632 or Steve Blackmon at 706-678-2278. All gifts to NASA are tax-deductible.
