Photo ID will not be required for Tuesday's Special Election Despite the fact that the Georgia Supreme Court voted Monday to dismiss a legal challenge to Georgia's voter ID law, which would require photo identification, photo ID will not be required for Tuesday's election. Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel said Monday that because early voting and absentee balloting had already started, a photo ID won't be required of voters voting in the special election for the 10th Congressional District and the state Senate's 24th District. Handel said she will start planning "education, outreach, and training efforts" to implement the law in local elections in September.
That means, Wilkes County Supervisor of Elections Judge Jim Burton said, voters casting ballots in early voting this week, on June 19, and in any needed runoff, can use any of several permitted IDs, including Social Security cards and current utility bills.
