New school groundbreaking set for July 2 Ground will be broken for the new high school/middle school complex in less than two weeks, Wilkes County Board of Education members agreed Monday night. "We're painting the shovels gold as we speak," said Superintendent Joyce Williams, after board members agreed to hold the official ground-breaking ceremonies on Monday, July 2, at 8 a.m. The public is invited, Board Chairman Ricky Callaway said, and city and county leaders are expected to attend. Williams further reported that construction permits for the new project were in place and that McKnight Construction would be erecting a sign at the construction site and setting erosion fencing this week. "We're up and running and ready to go," Williams said. Relating to the new school construction, board members discussed with Williams the preparations underway to put the SPLOST continuation on the November ballot. Board attorney Jim Roberts agreed that the legal language for the needed resolution would be ready to pass at the July meeting. Williams again stressed the need for people to be aware that the SPLOST must be passed to pay for the new school debt. "We've got our new school, but now we've got to pay for it," she said. "It's important that people understand that and vote for the SPLOST." The one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax is a one-cent tax collected on every dollar spent in Wilkes County. The SPLOST has to be passed by voters for some 20 years to pay for school construction going on now. Board members Callaway, Bob Guin, Kelly Powell, and Steve Albertson reviewed bids on three regular service contracts. Only one company bid on the fireextinguisher contract. Long-time service provider Dotson Fire Protection again won the system's contract to maintain all fireextinguishers in schools. South Star Propane won the bid to supply propane to the Wilkes County school bus repair facility. Sole bidder State Farm Insurance agent Scott Lewis won the contract to provide liability insurance for the system's school bus fleet. Bids for the purchase of two school buses were not opened at the meeting. Chairman Callaway said that transportation director James Callaway needed to be present at the bid opening to help weigh whether the purchase was needed this year or not.
After an executive session for personnel, the board reconvened and voted on a renegotiation of the contract for the construction project coordinator.
