Fourth of July Celebration to fill The Square with fun, food, music, big fireworks show

Kids and the Fourth just go together. This year, Fourth of July festivities and food will go on all day Wednesday.

"I invite everybody to come out early, eat lunch on The Square. If you haven't been out to try our new restaurants, including Sophie's, The Sandwich Shop, and Talk of the Town's Coffee Corner & Sammich Shop, you must come try them. You can also have lunch or dinner at the Washington Jockey Club or the Washington Square Café."

The all-day celebration will bring live entertainment by Bragg'n Hughes and Friends band. "We'll have many vendors on The Square with food and merchandise, and there'll be an arcade with video games, and Wildlife Action's animal exhibit., and lots of other fun stuff," she said. "The Square will be busy all day, so bring your lawn chairs and blankets and spend your day on The Square with your friends and family."

The midweek holiday makes celebrating the Fourth in Washington an even better idea, she said. "With gas prices so high, it's great to not have to travel for a spectacular firework show when it's right here in our own backyard. So, come on out for some food, fireworks, fun, and fellowship on the 4th of July! You're in for a treat!"

Barnett said that the $7,500 Melrose Pyrotechnic fireworks show is not yet paid for. She's organizing a "Celebrity Baggers" Fund Raiser at Bi-Lo for Saturday, June 30 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise more money. "Please call or e-mail me if you would like to help us bag groceries and take donations! We will also be having a cook-out on that day as well, in front of Bi-Lo, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., so if you don't have time to bag groceries with us, come by and have lunch. Your money goes to the fireworks fund, 100 percent."
