Churches of the Georgia Baptist Association and other interested friends, don't forget the reception to be held Saturday, June 23, at the Georgia Baptist Mission Center in Washington for Rev. and Mrs. James Bland, 3-5 p.m. Rev. Bland has served as Associational Missionary for nine years since 1998. He has accepted a call to another Association closer to their family. They have both touched many lives and we wish them well. . Phillips Mill Baptist Church Vacation Bible School got off to a good start Monday morning with lots of athletes and coaches showing up with excitement. Thanks to Charlotte Waller and the Good Lord for their teamwork as head coaches and to all volunteers. May God bless each of you, and each family touched. Please feel welcome to attend services at Phillips Mill anytime. Who knows what your input and interest could make. .We have some Phillips Mill folks having birthdays this month. Nell Shedd and Mary Jane McAvoy both had birthdays on Wednesday, June 20; Danny Thornton, Sunday, June 24; Pete Moore and Mary Jane Scarborough on Wednesday, June 27; and Perry Kirkland, son-in-law of Virginia Hunter, June 20. Belated happy birthday wishes to Eunice Mansfieldwho had a birthday Monday, June 18, and any others. .Mr. and Mrs. Dan McAvoy felt honored to have all four of their children and their mates all together at one time Sunday. Not only did they celebrate Father's Day, but Mr. and Mrs. McAvoy's 64th wedding anniversary which was two days later on Tuesday, June 19. Celebrating together with homemade ice cream and all kinds of goodies were: Jerry McAvoy who lives at home; Dorothy Ann and Jimmy Saxon; Curtis and Linda McAvoy; Donnie and Claudia McAvoy. They celebrated their seventh birthday. So you know great-grandmother Poss enjoyed the excitement. Son James Poss carried her to Augusta last week to the doctor and Joyce Ann will carry her this week. We hope Mrs. Poss will soon be much better. .Tyler Maxwell Scarborough was 10 years old Sunday, June 17, Father's Day. His mother, Mary Jane Scarborough, carried him and his grandparents, Morrison and Priscilla Maxwell, out to eat in Thomson at Long John Silvers where they celebrated Tyler's birthday and Father's Day. We got to see several family friends from Washington which brought on a happy smile and conversation. .Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of William Theodore "Billy" Neal, age 76, of Crawfordville who passed away Tuesday, May 29. He was born in Cairo, Grady County, Georgia, to the late Willis Theodora Neal and Emma Kate Ross Neal. He attended school in Crawfordville and graduated from Alexander Stephens Institute. During the Korean Conflicthe served his country in the United States Marine Corps. After returning from the war he married his school sweetheart, Norma Sherrer, daughter of the late Gene Sherrer and Olive Griffith Sherrer. Mr. Gene was a nephew of the late William Hill "Will" Sherrer of Carters Grove and among his first cousins was my mother, the late Martha Jane "Mattie" Sherrer Johnson. Among his brothers were the late Lewis Sherrer and the late Ellis Sherrer of Union Point, to name a few some of you might remember. A memorial service for Billy will be held this Sunday afternoon, June 24, at 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Crawfordville Baptist Church which used to be the ASI High School building. .We are happy that Nell Shedd's surgery went well in Thomson last week.
