School groundbreaking is Monday morning at 8

Contractors have already begun to turn a hayfieldinto a construction site as work gets underway for the new school complex.
It's worth getting out a little early on a July Monday to see a longdreamed of new school come one step closer to reality.

Board of Education members, city, county, and civic leaders, educators, and students are expected to attend ground-breaking ceremonies Monday, July 2, at 8 a.m. for the new high-school/middle-school complex on the Tignall Highway north of Washington.

"We're painting the shovels gold as we speak," said Superintendent Joyce Williams.

The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking, Board Chairman Ricky Callaway said, "This school is for all of us."

McKnight Construction is expected to erect a sign at the construction site and set erosion fencing this week.

The school project, which had been planned for years but looked impossible to fund a year ago, is expected to be complete by summer of 2009.
