Candidates campaign for District 10 runoff election set for July 17

Former state Senator Jim Whitehead and Dr. Paul Broun are canvassing the 10th Congressional District this week in preparation for the July 17 runoff election to fillthe district seat in Washington.

The two have also begun a series of debates on Georgia Public Radio and Georgia Public Television beginning Friday night.

Whitehead took some 44 percent of the vote in the June 18 special election to fillthe seat made vacant by the death of the late Sen. Charlie Norwood, and Broun took 22 percent, the next-best in a ninecandidate field.

Leading Democrat James Marlow, whose tally was less than 200 votes behind Broun, announced Monday that he would not contest the election by demanding a recount.

Registered voters, even if they didn't vote in the special election last month, may vote in the runoff July 17, said Deb Anderson of the Wilkes Voter Registration Office

Voters who voted absentee in the June Special Election would be automatically sent a ballot. Those who need to vote absentee for the runoff may request an absentee ballot.

Early voting will be held at the Wilkes County Courthouse the week prior to the July 17 runoff. Qualified voters may vote early from 8 a.m. Monday morning, July 9, through 5 p.m. Friday afternoon, July 13, at the Voter Registration office,Room 425.

Registered voters, even if they didn't vote in the special election last month, may vote early for the July 17 runoff.
