Broken gas line shuts down Robert Toombs
Traffic was stopped for hours on East Robert Toombs Avenue Saturday afternoon when an inch-and-a-quarter gas line was severed by contractors working on the turn lane for new businesses nearby. Washington Fire Chief and EMA Director Alan Poss said that the stiff wind and hot temperatures dispersed the gas, reducing the chance of fire. Fire department and Department of Transportation personnel stood by until contractors could get the leak stopped and the line repaired. There were no injuries.
