Washington has a blast on 4th
More than 20 vendors filled The Square all day, selling everything from food to crafts, and did good business all day, Tourism Director Ashley Barnett said, as live music and the smell of hamburgers filled the air. She said that more music and good food brought crowds to the Washington Farmers Market, too, and crowds seemed to fill every parking lot and yard for several blocks around. "I'm absolutely amazed at the crowds of people that came out," Barnett said. "There were people everywhere! Everybody seemed to have a blast all day and into the night." And, for the first time in years, the fireworks are paid for. The Tourism Director took on the job of raising the $7,500 for the Melrose Pyrotechnics fireworks show, and managed to raise more than $10,000 in just a few weeks. "Everybody I've asked has been so generous," she said, "businesses, the civic groups, and so many individuals gave to make this possible." A "celebrity baggers" fundraiser at Bi-Lo supermarket brought in more than $1,000 of that total, she said. "Chris Bishop of Bi-Lo made generous donations for our cookout, too, and that really helped."
The funds raised paid for this year's fireworks, plus expenses, with money left over for next year's celebration. "Washington should be very proud of our fireworks show, because it was the people who made it possible," Barnett said. "I can't wait 'til next year!"
