Restoration efforts underway
Bill Bennett, chairman of the North Alexander School Association (NASA), was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, July 7. Bennett gave members the history of the North Alexander School and the efforts of the Association to have it preserved. He said the school was last used in 1971 and is now used for storage. Originally built with a $15,000 bond issue in 1896, the school was opened in 1897. NASA is a tax-exempt organization and is working to finda community use that would preserve the structure. He urged members to support the association's objectives with the hope that the ground floor - which is in relatively good condition - could be used. Herb Stackhouse was the program host for the day.
