'Colors of Cancer' art show set July 13, 14, 15 in Watkinsville The first annual Colors of Cancer, an art exhibition to benefit the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support in Athens, will be held at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation in Watkinsville on July 13, 14, and 15. Through the Colors of Cancer Show the works of the participants in the Loran Smith Center's expressive painting and writing workshops will be exhibited. Artists and writers from both workshops will be present at designated times throughout the weekend to discuss their paintings and to read some of their poems and other creative writing. The participants are cancer survivors, their family members, or professional caregivers who work with people with cancer. Cathy Lannae of Washington is a participant in both workshops. "The participants in these programs have found creative ways to process their cancer experience and have grown emotionally and spiritually through this process," says Loran Smith Center Director Mona Taylor. "They are very generous in allowing us to experience their work. It is their hope that through their writing and painting others will better understand the cancer journey's impact of illness on the body, mind, and soul," she continued. "It is our hope at the Loran Smith Cancer Center that with this exhibit we will increase the awareness level of the value of our programs to the community at large," Taylor concluded.
The exhibit will be available on July 13, 6-9 p.m.; Saturday, July 14, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, July 15, noon to 5 p.m. For additional information interested persons may contact the Center at 706-475-4900; or Cathy Lannae at 706-678-2862.
