Director reports increasing tourism
Ashley Barnett (right), Tourism Director for Washington-Wilkes, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, July 3. She gave members an update on local tourism including a long list of activities designed to bring visitors to Washington and Wilkes County. She thanked the Kiwanis Club for its contributions to community and especially for the $500 contribution to help underwrite the Fourth of July fireworks show. Barnett reported that the March 2007 hotel/motel tax was up 35 percent over collections from last year and that amount collected in April 2007 alone was $6,523. These monies are then spent on promotion of W-W through advertisements and other activities. Pam Eaton was the program host for the day.
