Five die across Georgia over 4th; GSP says traffic lighter statewide Five traffic deaths were reported across Georgia during the 30-hour July Fourth holiday travel period. The Georgia State Patrol also reported 806 traffic crashes and 161 injuries between 6 p.m. Tuesday and midnight, July Fourth. With the July Fourth holiday falling in the middle of the week this year, traffic was lighter than a holiday travel period that stretches across a weekend. The lighter traffic combined with increased seat belt use, good weather, and high visibility patrols by Georgia law enforcement were factors that resulted in the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities being lower than expected. Traffic estimates for the holiday period from the Georgia State Patrol and the Crash Reporting Unit of the Georgia Department of Transportation were for 1,015 crashes, 397 injuries and six fatalities. The lowest number of traffic deaths re- corded over the July Fourth holiday period occurred in 1962 and again in 1984 when only two deaths were reported.
The next 2007 holiday traffic period will be Labor Day weekend beginning Friday, August 31 at 6 p.m. and ending at midnight on Labor Day, September 3.
