In the early part of last week, President Bush entertained Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Bush estate in Kennebunkport, Maine. Locals in Kennebunkport wanted to make President Putin feel welcome so one restaurant translated its menu into Russian; another named two alcoholic beverages -- the Hootin' Putin (raspberry vodka, lemonade and fruit juice), and the Putin Punch (rum and fruit juice), in honor of his visit; and yet another posted a sign that read: "Kennebunkport is Putin on the Ritz." Verrry clever! .It seems that just like fashion, food also follows trend. So, what's hot this summer -- buy local. Most folks are turning to locally grown foods, whether they pick them up at the farmers market or drive to the farms. "Foodmiles" -- counting the miles from farm to table -- is the new buzzword. .It may not have seemed like it to some, but in the session that stretched from January to the end of April, the House and Senate actually passed 397 bills and 1,526 resolutions. Many took effect the first of July. One such bill with regard to education allows school systems to operate with fewer regulations. It seems the aim is to let schools break the typical public school mold and experiment. Also, parents will get more power on school councils which help govern schools. Georgia's 200,000 public school teachers will receive a 3% cost-of-living raise -- certainly deserved. .Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Keener over the holiday were the following: Vince Keener of Snellville; and Mr. and Mrs. Chris Keener, Madison and Nolan of Loganville. There were many weddings chosen for July 7, 2007, because the number 7 is considered lucky. A baby was born in Wisconsin on July 7, 2007, and weighed 7 pounds and 7 ounces. What a lucky baby! .Dave and Tody Derrick attended the wedding of their granddaughter, Sara Ashe, and Mike Bruschi in Walhalla, S.C., Saturday, July 7. Four granddaughters were in the wedding and, of course, the bride. .Betty Dobson joined Amy and Robert Winecoff, Kierstyn and Zach on a trip to the Atlanta Zoo on Saturday, June 23. He will go back home when he is two years old. Betty also spent a few days including the Fourth of July with the Winecoffs in Greer, S.C. He was the son of Clyatt Rousey and the late Frankie Rousey. Clyatt and another sister, Rebecca, live in Atlanta. .Mr. and Mrs. Graydon Bobo spent last week in Bainbridge.
