Benji McAvoy surprised with 'Almost 50' celebration June 16
Hosting the event were his wife, Sherri; son, Jason McAvoy, and girlfriend, Donna Savage, of Augusta; daughter, Amanda McAvoy and fiancé, Chris Sanders, of Lincolnton; and daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Stewart Thomas of Eatonton. Festivities began in the afternoon when appearing at the McAvoy home were former Navy buddies, Brad Schmidt, wife, Janine, and children, of Indiana; and Doug Jorissen of Niceville, Fla. Benji and Brad had not seen each other in 22 years and Doug in more than fiveyears. The three had served aboard the USS America. Other surprise guests were Mrs. McAvoy's sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Mike Grome of Austin, Tex.; and cousin and wife, Jeff and Christy Marble of Orlando, Fla.; and close friends, Stu and Elaine McCrae of Owensboro, Ky. The surprise continued into the evening when the guest of honor made plans to treat all to dinner at the VFW. Once again the joke was on him as he opened the door to findmore than 100 friends, some former classmates, gathered with birthday well-wishes. His 49th birthday was June 3 and the surprise event was planned a year before the "Big 50" to catch him off guard.
A buffet of heavy hors d'oeuvres was enjoyed amid decorations of black balloons, black cloths, dead flowers, confetti and candles.
