GBI looking into drowning death of 5-year-old boy in local pond

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the tragic drowning death of a 5-year-old boy just outside Washington last week.

Joshua Campilii and his mother Mary Campilii were visiting their boarded horses at the Charles Rhodes home on Lincolnton Road Thursday night, along with another woman and two children, Chief Deputy Mike Sisson said.

The children had been instructed to stay in the car, while the women went to tend to a horse that appeared to be choking, Sisson said. At some point, the children got out and walked to a pond some 100 yards back, out of sight of the women. Joshua waded into the pond, the children told deputies, then went under.

The children told the women immediately, they said, and the women searched the pond unsuccessfully, then called 911. Sisson said that Charles Rhodes found the boy's body underwater.

Washington Fire and Rescue and Wilkes Emergency Medical Service paramedics arrived and tried to resuscitate the boy all the way to Wills Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Campiliis had come to Washington only recently, and Joshua was looking forward to starting school in a few weeks. He will be buried in New York state.

Obituary information appears on page 2.
