Immunization fair set next week to meet new schools shot rules

With recent changes to Georgia's child immunization requirements, the Wilkes County Health Department is holding an immunization fair next week to help the public follow the new requirements, county health officials said this week.

The Wilkes County Health Department will be open for immunizations and information next Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday 8 to 4:30; and Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

New rules took effect throughout Georgia July 1, and apply to all children in or entering Wilkes County schools, said Director Jennifer Jackson, RN.

The new vaccination requirements are as follows:

l Children entering kindergarten, sixth grade or any Georgia school for the first time in any grade must have received a second dose of the chickenpox and mumps vaccines. If a child has received the second dose, he or she must have proof of the immunizations.

l Children born after Jan. 1, 2006, who are being enrolled in school or child care must be vaccinated against Hepatitis A or have proof of immunization.

l Children who are younger than 5 who are being enrolled in child care, pre-K or Head Start must have received a vaccination to prevent pneumonia.
