Shala Hendry and Robert Phillips exchange wedding vows June 18

Shala L. Hendry of Lavonia, formerly of Washington, and Robert L. Phillips of Lavonia were married in a beautiful beachside ceremony outside Melrose Inn on Daufuskie Island, off the coast of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Monday, June 18, at eleven o'clock in the morning. Rev. Wayne Cobb of Savannah officiated the private double-ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Jim Hendry of Washington and Mrs. Lee Hendry of Elberton. She is the granddaughter of Bill Hendry and the late Mrs. Charlotte B. Hendry of Washington.

The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Inez Roach and Bobby J. Phillips of Lavonia and the grandson of James Robert Phillips and Mrs. James H. Denny of Lavonia and the late Mr. and Mrs. Mathis Lambert.

Charlotte Taylor McAvoy of Lavonia served as her mother's maid of honor. She wore a tea-length white princess gown accented with pink rose embroidery and carried a bouquet of pink roses tied with pink ribbon.

The bride was stunning in a floorlength white gown with a fitted bodice finished with spaghetti straps. The dress featured elegant white beadwork and embroidery as well as a ribbon cross tie in the back.

She carried a bouquet of cream and pink roses tied with white and blue ribbon.

Following the ceremony, the wedding party and guests including the bride's mother, Mrs. Lee Hendry, and Anna Hogan of Martinez, enjoyed a luncheon at Jack's Restaurant on the island. The focal point of the table was the two-tiered wedding cake, a seven-layer chocolate and raspberry confection, decorated in a butter cream basket weave icing and fresh red roses by Signe's Heaven Bound Bakery of Hilton Head.

Reception

Following the wedding, the bride and bridegroom were hosts at a reception in Lavonia at their farm, Southern Comfort Cattle Company, on June 23.

Guests entered the barn through the main entrance adorned with a sign congratulating the couple that was made by the younger guests.

Guests were invited to sign the bride's book tended by Asden Crowe of Hartwell.

Following a blessing by Craig Rickman of Elberton, a delicious low country boil meal, prepared by T-60 of Anderson, S.C., was enjoyed at 7 p.m. After the buffet, guests enjoyed a large array of desserts prepared by the mother of the bride.

Children's activities included basketball, bubbles from the top balcony, s'mores by the bonfire,a DJ limbo line, hoola-hoops, sparklers and a livestock petting zoo.

A surprise presentation of the wedding gift was made to the bride at 7:30 p.m. The bridegroom presented his bride a beautiful registered buckskin quarter horse mare.

Musical entertainment was provided throughout the evening by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Anderson of Iva, S.C.

A fireworks display by Andy Stadler of Indiana was enjoyed at 9:30 p.m.

Approximately 150 guests attended. Washington area guests included Bill Hendry, Jim Hendry, Jay Hendry, Jason Callaway, Lynda Pollock, Anna Hogan, Suzie Weaver, Josh, Lacey and Jade Fincher and Kevin, Alicia and Andrew Woodham of Macon.

Mr. and Mrs. Phillips are making their home in Lavonia. The bride is a graduate of Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School and the Medical College of Georgia where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy. The bridegroom is a graduate of Franklin County High School and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
