W-W All-Stars beat West Point 10-4 to advance in state Little League playoffs
By Logan Feraro

W-W All-Stars ready to leave for state competition at Rockmart are (front row, l-r) Dusty Robinson, Tiffany Guay, Erika Scott, Hannah McTier, Hollie Huffman, (back) Dakota Ferraro, Bailey Echols, Abby Smith, Paige McAvoy, Brittany Guin, and (not pictured) Lauren Chafin.
After winning the District 6 Championship, the Wilkes County Girls All-Star softball team went to Rockmart, Georgia, for the state tournament. Their first task of the state competition was to rid the tournament of the District 4 champions from West Point, on July 15.

Coaches Belle Guin and Scott Chafin attended the first game West Point played, which was against Rockmart's home team. Rockmart opened their hosted tournament with a 4-2 win. The coaches returned to the team with high confidence.

If the girls were nervous before the game, they didn't show it as they took the field with their heads up. The Tigers started off the tournament with a 10-4 win. Highlights of the match were abundant. In the first inning, West Point took a 1-0 lead, but the Tigers came back with their offense scoring three runs.

In the second inning, West Point scored one more run. The Tigers, once again, scored three runs after an RBI double by Bailey Echols. Then, a very close steal at home by Brittany Guin ended in a run.

West Point pulled another two runs back in the third inning, making the score 6-4. West Pont's at bat came to a rough end with a tagged out at home plate by Abby Smith, who was left down on the plate for a few seconds but shook it off to finish a great game.

No runs were scored in the fourth inning after a great defensive showing by both teams.

The Tigers managed to hold West Point in the fifth inningand scored four runs of their own in the fifth after a screaming ball down the foul line ended in a double and two RBIs for Erica Scott. That made the score 10-4.

All the Tigers had to do to win the match was to hold West Point in the sixth and final inning, which they did. The first batter was a strikeout for Smith. The second out was a pop-up bunt, which was caught by Guin. It all came down to the last strikeout.

The gamed ended in perfect time as the rain began pouring down. The girls left the field they same way they came on, with their heads held high, though a few were slightly ange.

The Coaches gave the team an award winning pep talk about how they showed great sportsmanship and that's why they won the game.

Reports from Tuesday's late game against Rockmart and Wednesday's elimination round were not available by press time for this issue. Watch next week's News-Reporter for details of those and other games.
