A throng of excited middle schoolers will burst threw the awaiting doors of Wilkes County's latest Title I Distinguished School on August 3. Washington-Wilkes Middle School was awarded this distinct honor after making Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) for three consecutive years.

New to the campus is the rising sixth grade class of 2014. Several members of the 2014 graduating class visited W-WMS campus prior to the corridors being filled with energetic middle schoolers. There to greet these individuals were Principal Bill Pendrey, Assistant Principal Deleki Lee, Counselor Libby Swinson, Barbara Hines, and Michelle Fanning.

Parents are encouraged to motivate their children to have a fantastic school year by: getting proper rest, eating a healthy breakfast and lunch, participating in learning activities, communicating with teachers and administrators, getting organized, and doing their best every day. Parents are also urged to read the student handbook closely this year and note any changes to the dress code and code of conduct.

Lunch prices have also changed. Please send the proper funds with your child. Breakfast is $0.85; lunch is $1.75; reduced breakfast is $0.30; reduced lunch is $0.40. Free/ reduced meal applications are available. Students will only be allowed to make three charges. Parents will be able to pay for lunches in the cafeteria or online.

Please remember to purchase school supplies. The W-WMS supply list is posted throughout town where supplies may be purchased. Supplies may vary by grade level, but listed is a generic list that applies to all grade levels: two-inch three ring notebooks, wide rule notebook paper, folders with pockets, number 2 pencils, blue/black pens, 5 packs of dividers, highlighters, and composition books.

New to the faculty this year are Cory Evans, Laurie Dehil, Sandra Standard, and Terri Hammond.

Open house is from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, August 2. Visit our website at www.wilkes.k12.ga.us/ WWMS/index.htm.
