Burton to speak on '1776' at Foundation meeting Washington's own Emory Allen Burton will be the featured speaker at the Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation's quarterly meeting this Sunday afternoon, August 5, at 2:30. Meeting place is the Robert Toombs House. President Stephanie Macchia reminds attendees that it is time to update memberships. She also encourages visitors to come enjoy the special program. Well-known throughout the area for his expertise on American history and his thoroughly researched programs, Burton was educated in Wilkes County schools. After attending Georgia Military College, he received his BBA in 1964 from the University of Georgia and followed that with an MBA from New York Institute of Technology in 1974. Turning to his love of academics, he gained a BS in government from the University of Maryland in 1980 and a MA in history from Old Dominion in 1985. After a 23-year career in the U.S. Army with tours in Vietnam and Europe, he retired in 1988 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is currently Assistant Dean of Georgia Military College, an institution of over 5000 students on several campuses. Among Burton's responsibilities are hiring of teachers, managing academic scheduling, advising students, and teaching American history. For his program this Sunday, he has chosen the topic of "1776."
The W-WHF will also make several presentations to the Wilkes County community in its continuing effort to promote and encourage preservation and historical resources.
