New Salem services will be held all the week, Monday-Friday nights at 7:30 p.m. .On August 12, Phillips Mill Baptist Church will have homecoming. Revival services will be held Sunday night through Wednesday night at 7 p.m. .Churches of the Georgia Baptist Association are encouraged to take part in Christmas In August Mission project for Meansville Children's Home and to attend Christmas In August get-together at the Mission Center on Saturday morning, August 25, at 10:30 a.m. Items being collected are school supplies, notebooks and paper, pencils and pens, etc. Personal items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion and soap, deodorant and shampoo, dish detergent, twin sheets and pillowcases, and washcloths are needed. Thanks ahead of time for your input. .Congratulations and best wishes to Dorothy "Sherrer" Howard of Phillips Mill Baptist Church and Stephen Mark Thornton who were married on Saturday evening, June 23, at the home of her aunt, Deana (Howard) and uncle, Brent Sherrer, on Philomath Road, Rayle. Sherrer is a great-granddaughter of the late Pope McAvoy and Susie Sherrer McAvoy of Phillips Mill. .Congratulations and best wishes to W.A. and Johnnie Lou Mathews Stevens of Wrightsboro Road, Washington, on celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary recently. Their children, Vickie Stevens and Ricky Stevens, and his family honored them with a lovely reception on Sunday afternoon, July 22, at Washington Chapel and East Robert Toombs Avenue in Washington. Many in the area, including me (Priscilla) have fond memories of working with both of them years ago at Almar, making raincoats. .Bud and Everlena Mathews Moon of Oglethorpe County were among relatives attending the 50th wedding anniversary reception for W.A. and Johnnie Lou Stevens. Following the reception for her sister and brotherin law, they visited a friend, Mildred Nunn McAvoy, and family on their way home. Mildred and Everlena used to work together at the Royal. Johnnie Lou and Everlena are sisters of the late Mary Dell (Mrs. Dewitt) Johnson who is buried at Phillips Mill. .Phillips Mill Baptist Church is among some of the oldest churches in Georgia and has had some outstanding pastors and wife teams over the years. Among them was the late Rev. R.L. "Bill" Duke and his sweet wife Judy Martin Duke who was with us from 1959 to 1963. Our last pastorium made of brick, built by the late Guy Sherrer and his crew, had just been completed, so the Duke family were the first occupants of the new pastorium near Griffin'sStore. Rev. Duke's resignation was effective February 1963 to become Associational Missionary for the Georgia Baptist Association 1963-1968. Then he worked with the Baptist Children's Home for a while. After leaving Phillips Mill the old Drake Funeral Home house was up for sale in Washington and they got to purchase it and finished raising their two children, Richard and Carol. Both married Wilkes County youth. Richard married Bettye Griffin of Phillips Mill and Carol married Bill Cloer of Washington. Many people throughout the area were sorry to learn of the death of Mrs. Judy Duke Friday, July 20, at Wilkes Health Care Center. Graveside services were held Saturday in Resthaven Cemetery with longtime friend, Rev. Albert W. Huyck Jr., officiating. One of the joys in the Duke family was grandson Trent Cloer and his wife Mary Katherine. Sincere sympathy is extended to all the family. May each of us who knew Rev. and Mrs. Duke cherish fond memories. This is written with love and respect. -- Priscilla Maxwell. .Sincere sympathy to the family of Gary H. Smith, 60, of Warrenton who passed away on Thursday, July 5. He was the grandfather of Jessica Turner and Dustin Turner who are also grandchildren of Agnes Hester Smith. . Phillips Mill Baptist Church's prayer meeting group Wednesday night had a nice surprise. A former pastor, Rev. Jerry DeBell of Valhermoso Springs, Ala., and his wife Dianne whom he married in 2000. Rev. DeBell and his first wife, Earline, who passed away, were at Phillips Mill 1950-1952. Rev. and Mrs. DeBell also made contact with other churches he served in our Association along about the time he was at Phillips Mill. He reminded those present at prayer meeting about baptizing a number of adults and other memories. .Remember. God loves you. I look forward hopefully to seeing many of you at Phillips Mill's homecoming August 12, second Sunday.
