Fantastic family outing provides chance to shake Carter's hand One of my goals this summer was to ride a train. The television station, PBS, did a special a while back on tourist spots in Georgia and the S-A-M Shortline Excursion Train was briefly featured. My brother, William Durham, who lives in Cordele, inquired about the excursion. I called and booked my family for the "Hawkins" car. The trip was extremely pleasant and everyone had a great time. Without admitting it, they had thought it would be some boring, sleepy trip. Along with my brother; my mother, Eva Mae Durham of Abbeville; my sister, Laura Durham of Abbeville; my sister, Sandra Durham of Jonesboro, and her friend Thez; my sister, Valerie Durham of Albany; my husband, Enoch Booker, and son Thomas, we had a great trip. After boarding the train at 9:30 a.m. in Cordele, we stopped at Georgia Veterans Parks and then had lunch at the gorgeous Windsor Hotel in Americus. The people were very gracious. We then continued to Plains where we were able to browse in the shops and sample peanut-butter ice cream. We finally arrived in Archer, birthplace of Past President Jimmy Carter. After we toured the houses, barns, and fields, Jimmy Carter himself arrived, with body guards included. They were extremely nice. I took several pictures of him, but, Enoch, William and Valerie got to shake his hand! Once they boarded the train we could tell all of the ones who got an opportunity to shake the past president's hand. Their hands were "hanging" in midair. At one point in the trip, we had a "yo-yo" man for some brief entertainment. He did some tricks with his yo-yo. We arrived back in Cordele at 5:20 p.m. It was a fantastic family outing.
My next dream? To visit the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., by train.
