Grading nearly done for school site, materials, 24-hour security in place

Surveyors from Echols Surveying work next to the outline of the foundation for one of the schools' two wings.
With the construction of the new Washington-Wilkes middle and high school complex underway one month this week, changes are taking place rapidly at the Tignall Highway site.

Construction manager Claude Bolton briefed Superintendent of Schools Joyce Williams on the status of construction Tuesday morning, she said. "The grading is 90 percent done on the site, and they will start this week digging the foundations for two of the wings of the school."

The first loads of materials are also being delivered to the site this week, Bolton said, so 24-hour security has been put in place. "We'll have a full-time guard here to keep an eye on things."

While the first month has entailed mostly hundreds of hours of grading the site, Bolton said that more visible changes would come quickly now. "You'll really see things happening out here in the next week or two," he said.

The project is expected to be complete as early as January 2009.
