County commissioners award EMS expansion, make property decisions at July called meeting

The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners handled a few matters of business at a called meeting late last month including the awarding of a contract for the expansion of the Wilkes County Emergency Services building, and the approval of a agreement which will allow for the purchase of the Hexcel building and property on the Sharon Road.

Two bids on the EMS building expansion were submitted and Central Steel of Louisville, Georgia, was easily the low bidder. The contract was awarded to Central Steel who has "done a lot of work up here and are very familiar to us," according to County Administrator David Tyler. The expansion will include three new bays for trucks and two offices.

After County Attorney Charles LeGette presented information concerning the Payroll Development Authority's readiness to purchase the Hexcel building and property, commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement which would allow for a county/city backing of the purchase contract.

Commissioners also voted to convey the title to the Simpson property at the corner of Gordon Street and Marshall Drive back to the hospital. Tyler said there had been previous discussion on this issue and that commissioners felt "they didn't need to hold title to that building and it was in the best interests of the county to turn it back over to the hospital."

In order to prevent the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) from recalling uncommitted funds, the commission also approved the awarding of a contract for the resurfacing of the east parallel taxiway at the Wilkes County Municipal Airport.

The next meeting of the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners is today, August 16, at 2 p.m. at the Wilkes County Courthouse.
