Marketplace sets open house Fri., 10-noon
By KRYSTLE KVALHEIM, intern reporter

Dave Toburen and Margaret Norris show the new sign almost ready for the opening of the food pantry and thrift store at God's Marketplace.
God's Marketplace, located at the Southern Outdoors property on East Robert Toombs Avenue, will host a ribbon cutting on Friday at 11 a.m. with Mayor Willie Burns and Donna Hardy of the Chamber of Commerce. Open house will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and light refreshments will be served. The food pantry will be open for business on Tuesday at 9 a.m with Rich Seibert serving as the director. The volunteers expect to serve 70 or more people within the first month. The thrift store is still a work in progress and is expected to open September 15 with Tena Blakey as the director.

"Thanks to the community for all of their support. It has been fantastic. All are encouraged to come out and celebrate with us at the ribbon cutting," Dave Toburen, chairman of the Board of Directors, said about the project.

It had been an uphill battle to get the idea of God's Marketplace to become a reality when the zoning for the property was not passed in May. However, the matter was brought again to Washington City Council and the zoning was passed in early June. The lease for the property is renewable through December 31, 2009, with an option to renew after that period.

The marketplace will run on a volunteer basis. If you would like to volunteer time or donate to God's Marketplace please contact the First United Methodist Church at 706-

678-7116.
