Director tells about Wilkes EMS
Blake Thomson, director of the Wilkes County EMS, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, August 7. Thompson gave members an overview of the history of the EMS in Wilkes County, its current operations, and he spelled out his goals for future service. He told members that there are 7,000 residents trained in basic life support techniques and that EMS gives this training to 400-500 additional persons per year. The First Responder program has saved lives. If a patient that has had a heart attack can received basic life support within the first 4-6 minutes, they have a 95 percent chance for survival. Current survival figures for Wilkes County, because of its Firt Responders, is 41 percent compared to the national rate of 7 percent.
