Frances Wheelis WOM members meet August 6 at Hopkins home

The Frances Wheelis Women on Mission of the First Baptist Church met in the home of Rosemary Hopkins on East Robert Toombs Avenue Monday evening, August 6, for the annual salad supper and installation of officers.

Kay Nelms offered the blessing for the bountiful meal.

After dinner, members gathered in the den where Nancy Madden presided over the business meeting. She read the WMU Watchword and welcomed guests and prospective members, Evelyn George, Jackie Gillispie and Pat Grimaud.

After reports were given, several announcements were made including the prayer walk around the schools on Saturday, August 11, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Washington- Wilkes Comprehensive High and Middle School; the WMU Leader's Training Conference August 16; and the World Hunger Chili Cook-Off on October 14.

Mrs. Madden told of plans for the Melanie Hart Concert and Conference in late September.

New officers installed were Melanie Wells, facilitator; Cheryl Edwards, vice-facilitator; Louise McClearen, secretary; Gail Hunter, treasurer; Teresa Bishop, mission support; Kay Nelms and Rosemary Hopkins, mission action; Susan Pope, mission study; Nancy Madden, card chairman; and Julia Palmer, social chairman.

Several mission action plans were made.

Because the Labor Day holiday falls on the usual first Monday meeting date, the next meeting date was changed to Monday, September 10.

Teresa Bishop led the missionary prayer calendar with focus on Jeremiah 33:3 and the work in West Africa. After missionaries' names were given as well as those with special needs, Mrs. Bishop led in prayer.

Present were Kay Nelms, Susan Pope, Elizabeth Pope, Melanie Wells, Jackie Gillispie, Pat Grimaud, Nancy Madden, Evelyn George, Julia Palmer, Teresa Bishop, Louise McClearen, Cheryl Edwards and Rosemary Hopkins.
