What can one do with all this August heat? Heywood Hale Brown once said, "Sweat is the cologne of accomplishment." I findit hard to accomplish even my exercise of walking and don't findmany other people out walking either, so I've decided it's a good time for siestas. The thunderstorm Sunday brought some much needed rain, but I understand thunderstorms upset dogs. I know of someone who has to give their dog a nerve pill when there is a storm because the dog gets so upset. .Larry and Penny Fort have returned from a trip to Arizona, Nevada, California, and Texas visiting all their grandchildren. When they returned they spent a week in Daytona. Larry says he feels well and has only two more treatments left. .Spending a day last week with Myrline Thornton was Vivian Campbell of Elberton. .Gloria Harris enjoyed spending Wednesday with granddaughters, Aubree Harris of Elberton and Laken Harris of Greenville, S.C. After having lunch together they had a funtime doing back to school shopping. .Speaking of back to school shopping, Richard and I took grandson Curt Gammon school shopping. He had to wear some of his new clothes home. He said it would be a long time before he got to wear them because these were probably going to be picture-taking clothes. .On Friday night, Layton and Gloria Harris attended a cookout at the lake home in the Broad River area of Jim and Sylvia Powel who live in Simpsonville, S.C. Several couples joined them for a night of fun and good food. Cousins of Layton and Gloria, Faye and Reggie Walters of St. Mary's, stopped by on their way home from a trip to Ohio to visit them. They're all looking forward to the annual Pope reunion coming up soon in McRae. .The Tignall Baptist Ladies Retreat is coming up September 14 and 15 at the Baptist Conference Center in Toccoa. Call Kay Fincher and get signed up. This is always a real treat. .All teachers and students were recognized at Tignall Baptist Church Sunday morning and there was a special prayer for them. .Scott Ware spent several days last week in the Elbert County Hospital. We hope he is doing well. I understand Clarence Wilson is in Wills Memorial Hospital after falling and breaking his hip. William Echols is also in Wills Memorial Hospital recovering from heart surgery. We wish them well. .Celeste Adams is home and recovering from her surgery. Her sister and her husband, Nanette and Jim Presnell of Cleveland, spent one day last week with O'Neal and Celeste. Also joining them for the day were Amanda and Abby Range of Bethlehem. .Wilbur and Ouida Maney attended the Maney family reunion in Asheville, N.C., the last weekend in July. Last weekend was spent at another family reunion in Hiawassee with reunion of the Nicholson family which was Wilbur's mother's family. The Nicholsons were direct descendants of the Revolutionary soldier, John Nicholson, who is buried near Blairsville. .Visiting Ricky and Wanda Cox for the weekend were Sherri and Brad Cochran, Abigail and the new baby, Ella, of Lawrenceville. Joining them for lunch Sunday were Shaun and Ashley Cox and Aubrey and Seth and Dascha Cox, Hunter and Haleigh. .Albert and Eudora Huyck have just returned from Tyler, Texas, where the Huyck family reunion was held. They spent July 24-31 on the road from here to Tyler. On the way they stopped in Tupelo, Texas, and visited the birthplace of Elvis Presley which was a little tworoom house. On the way home they went on to Memphis, Tennessee, and toured Graceland which was a big change from Elvis Presley's childhood. The Huycks went on to Burleson, Texas, and met Albert's brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Huyck of Salisbury, N.C., where they all visited the gravesites of their parents, Dr. and Mrs. A. Warren Huyck, and their maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Anderson. Then they all traveled on to Tyler where they met all the other family members for the family reunion. Tyler, Texas, is the home of Albert Huyck's sister and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Tom Lyles. .Kay Tyler and Carolyn Gammon visited with Pat Mack and Sara Frances Henderson last Saturday afternoon. While there they got a chance to visit with more cousins, Barbara and R.C. Oakley of Hamilton, Ed Rhodes, Cathy Johnson and Lauren, April Rhodes and Chris Mack. Pat is still staying with her sister, Sara Frances, and is now confinedto a wheelchair for a few weeks. .Beulah Baptist Church is about ready for homecoming next weekend, Sunday, August 12. They are hoping to have the new family life center ready by then. .The children of Mallorysville Baptist Church enjoyed a swimming party at the home of Marion and Tony Hammond on Saturday afternoon. After swimming they feasted on hamburgers and hot dogs. .Ryan Burton of Cairo visited his parents, Joe and Debbie Burton, Friday through Tuesday. On Sunday, Joe and Debbie and Tony and Marion Hammond put their dinners together and had a family dinner at the home of the Hammonds. Dinner guests of the Hammonds and Burtons were Ryan, Cassie and Mindi Burton, Marc and Heather Hammond, Brock and Camden, Bill and Terri Hammond, Lola and Makala of Crawford, and their neighbor, Doris Smathers. .Kathy and Dale Robertson of Dacula visited with Vivian and Louie Wolozin on Sunday. .Linda Aycock attended a baby shower for Heather Baston at the Danny Barnett home in Washington Saturday. She was excited to see former classmate, Jackie Baston Starks from Greenville, S.C., whom she had not seen since 1963. .Approximately 70 family members and friends met Sunday at Fishing Creek Baptist Church Fellowship Hall with a covered dish dinner in celebration of Rose Ware's birthday.
