Visit home brings back wonderful memories TO THE EDITOR: My visit back in time (the 1950s) was an absolute delight thanks to Gracia Long Smith, my dearest friend in Washington dating back to the seconnd grade! Starting on Thursday we visited both of the old school buildings on N. Alexander which brought back many fond memories. We lunched at Washington's delightful Jockey Club; toured the beautifully restored Fitzpatrick; shopped all around the nostalgic Square spending too much money at Scarborough's (was that the old Blackmons'?) and the wonderful little garden shop next to the old theatre; and worked in a short visit with Mary Ann Peeler, another childhood friend. After spending so many memorable hours in the old theatre as a child, I was disappointed to see a parking lot in its place. I was also disappointed to see grass growing in the old pool but happily had the opportunity to swing in the fondly-remembered park on Liberty Street. I saw the letter from Mike Barry maligning the park but can't say that I totally agree with his negative assessment. On Friday Beth Ard, the current owner, was so warm and sweet to let me relive my childhood at 212 Cedar Street. I'm sorry that I missed seeing Randy Young, a former neighbor and playmate, but my daddy, Paul G. Lewis, and I did have a chance to visit on Saturday with Randall, Libba, and Greg Denard, also former neighbors, and sample their absolutely delicious barbeque. We even bought several pounds to take to the Lewis Family Reunion in Shady Dale, Georgia, which was Sunday. I had the opportunity to attend the wedding reception of my cousin, Anna Norman Hearn, at the Livery on Saturday morning. All in all, Washington is still a wonderful, beautiful little town and I felt privileged to have spent time t here again.
