Lady Tigers get started with win over Aquinas

The Washington-Wilkes Lady Tigers softball team got its 2007 season underway early this week at the Thomson Invitational Tournament with a convincing win over the Aquinas Fighting Irish, 14-3. On Tuesday, games were scheduled against Thomson and Burke County but results were not known by press time for this issue. Those games will be reported as details are made available.

In beating Aquinas, Cayla Gilland pitched a complete six-inning game allowing only two hits and a single earned run while striking out nine batters. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth on the mercy rule when the gap between the two teams exceeded 10 runs.

The Tigers collected 11 hits in the game and were led by Taylor Echols (3-for-5), Jaleesa Hampton (3-for-3), and Ashley West (2-for-4). Lindsey Guin was the speedster with three stolen bases in the contest.

Returning starters for the 2007 season include Uniqua Freeman, Yakira Banks, Ashley Burt, Hampton, Echols, and Guin. Other ladies on the roster include Tiffany Bowling, Gabby Lavendar, Lauren Harrison, Loni Thompson, Kimbricus Sturgis, West, and Gilland. Seniors are Burt and Hampton only, after the team lost four seniors last year.

Rob Jackson is head coach for the team again this year and is he joined by assistant coach Becky Wilson.
