Preseason jamboree set this Friday night; Tigers young, strong

A couple of weeks of practice in this heat has toughened an already tough team of Washington-Wilkes Tigers as they prepare for something of a rebuilding season which begins with the annual preseason Jamboree tomorrow night in Elberton.

However, the "rebuilding" applies mainly to the youth of the W-W team and the inexperience in many of the skill positions. Coming back after the graduation of Kelmetrus Wylie, Gary Wilburn, Khiry Tutt, Clete Wilson, and others, the Tigers are still somewhat unsure who'll call the signals and carry the ball, so to speak. But the players are still strong and what the skill players lack in experience, the line makes up in power.

The Brute Squads up front on both offense and defense should be awesome forces against any opponent and the best part is, except for the super-strong Dan Wylie, they'll all be back next year. In fact, Head Coach Russell Morgan reports that the Tigers will lose only two of the current starters to graduation next spring.

The Jamboree, which begins in Elbert County at 7 p.m. Friday, will be a trial run for the Tigers on both sides of the ball but the biggest question of all lies in the starting quarterback position. Three candidates - Ty McGill, Alvecchio Perlotte, and Teverrius (Poodie) Jones (a junior, a sophomore, and a freshman, respectively) - all have a shot at the starting position and all will probably see plenty of playing time. Each has different strengths and talents and Morgan says his decision will be tough.

The Jamboree will follow a regular game format with the Tigers battling the Blue Devils for four 12-minute quarters. Most, if not all, of the W-W personnel will see playing time and the fourth quarter will probably be reserved for many of the youngest players. After the Jamboree, the Tigers will have just one week to prepare for the opening of the regular season against another bunch of Devils in Warren County.
