Local team meeting to accelerate action on Work Ready effort Wilkes County has been chosen as an "Accelerated Community" in Georgia's Work Ready initiative and local team members are meeting Monday, August 27, to work on the local effort. "This will be lead by a team of folks from all over the county, from businesses, the Chamber, economic development, government, and education partners," Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Donna Hardy said. They will be meeting on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the Mary Willis Library meeting room, at 204 East Liberty Street in Washington. "This is what we've been waiting for, and now all the hard work begins," Hardy said. "We've been awarded a $35,000 state grant to assist in accelerating our earning Certified Work Ready Community status." The designation shows that the county has the talented workforce, she said, that business demands and the educational infrastructure to drive economic growth and prosperity. To be designated a Certified Work Ready Community, Wilkes County must demonstrate a commitment to improving the local graduation rate (a minimum goal is a 2% increase over the next three-year period); show a specified percentage of graduates are entering the workforce; and drive current workers and the unemployed to obtain a Work Ready Certificate."Wilkes County's goal here is 214 certificatesover the next 18 months," Hardy said. Earning Certified Work Ready Community status will ensure citizens have the talent necessary to staff existing jobs and to master the innovative technologies new jobs will require tomorrow, Hardy said. "We will help transform our economy and give our community a competitive advantage in attracting new business and jobs."
