Lady Tigers smash Fighting Irish in home opener The Washington-Wilkes Tiger softball team beat the Fighting Irish for the third time in the 2007 home opener on Tuesday, August 21, by the impressive score of 11-1. Nikki Freeman picked up the win, pitching four shutout innings. Cayla Gilland pitched the last three innings in relief. The win made the Tigers 4-2 on the season with games scheduled against Thomson at home on Wednesday, August 22, and on the road at Glascock today Thursday) to take on the Panthers at 5 p.m. In the Thomson Invitational Tournament, the ladies ended up in second place behing a strong Thomson team. Early in the tourney, after beating Aquinas in the first game, the Lady Tigers split a pair of games on Tuesday, August 14, in Thomson. In game one the Tigers lost by a score of 0-10 to the Thomson Bulldogs. The game was tied 0-0 through four innings when the Tigers committed six errors on defensive which led to nine unearned runs. In game two, the Tigers rebounded to beat Burke County 12-2. Freeman pitched a complete game allowing only two runs on two hits. Leading hitters for the Tigers were Freeman (3-3, 2 triples and a double) and Ashley West (2-2, with a double). On Saturday, August 18, the Tigers beat Aquinas again, this time by the score of 6-2. Cayla Gilland picked up her second win of the season pitching a complete game allowing one run on two hits while striking out six batters. Leading hitters for the Tigers were Yakira Banks (3-4, 3b), Lindsey Guin (1-3), Freeman (1-4), West (1-4, 2b), and Jaleesa Hampton (1-4). In the championship game, the Lady Tigers came up short to Thomson by the score of 2-0 to finish second in the Thomson Invitational tournament. Gilland pitched a complete game allowing only 1 hit and 0 earned runs. The Tigers committed two errors in the first inning which allowed both runs to score. That would be the only scoring in the game. The Tigers collected fivehits but were unable to score a run.
"We put the ball in play only striking out two times in the game. We seemed to hit the ball right at them and they made the plays on defense," Coach Rob Jackson said. "After the first inning our defense really stepped up to keep us in the game. We just did not get that clutch hit with runners in scoring position."
