Johnson receives scholarship from Black Rock AME Church

Joey Johnson received a $500 scholarship presented by the Black Rock AME Church, Tignall, on Sunday, August 19. Rev. James Lawson is the pastor.

This year marks the eighth year that a deserving student has received this scholarship which is funded by the church members and friends.

Joey is a 2007 graduate of Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School. He enjoys reading and working on the computer. During high school he played for the Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School football team.

Joey will enroll at Devry University this fall and major in computer technology. He is the son of Henry Gartrell of Washington.

Many of his family members were present during the awards ceremony and his father gave each member of the congregation a pen with Joey's name engraved on it to express his gratitude.

Special appreciation was expressed to Phyllis Wilkinson, Gloria Walton, Dan Wilkinson, Larry An- drews, and the Black Rock members for making the scholarship possible.
