Retirement reception honors Mari-Ann Remsen Mari-Ann Remsen, operator of Mari-Ann's Hair Styles in Rayle for many years, retired recently and was honored at a reception at Rayle City Hall Saturday afternoon, August 25. She was presented a corsage of silk flowers which complemented her pretty, colorfully embroidered, white sweater and pants outfit.Tiny scissors and butterflies were tucked amid the petals. The hall was beautifully decorated in bright summer colors of pink, lime green, and yellow, reminiscent of Mari-Ann's usually cheerful attire. Large squares of these colors were used over white covers on the refreshment and gift tables. A large arrangement of summer flowers in coordinating colors was placed in a nest of tulle at the center corner of the refreshment table. A small angel was in front of this arrangement. White candles in graduating heights were to the side. The table held a variety of party foods and fruit punch. A small round table at the entrance was covered with a forest green cloth. The guest register, along with a bud vase of summer flowers and copies of a poem written for Mari- Ann by Mildred Sisson, copied and decorated by Gloria Wheatley, was on the table. On the piano was a lovely vase of zinnias from Christine Wheatley's garden. Cards and other expressions of love were on a table near the entrance. The table was decorated the same as the refreshment table with candles, and a smaller arrangement of flowers in a nest of lime green, pink and yellow tulle which extended down the table. A large decorated sheet cake was on one end of the table. The cake was made by Christine Wheatley and was decorated by Gloria Wheatley who also decorated the hall. The inscription on the cake, "We love you, Mari-Ann," expressed the feelings of all her clients -- ladies and gentlemen, most of whom came to tell her so in person. Some of these people have been going to Mary-Ann's to have their hair cut, shampooed, set, or permed since she moved her business to Rayle 32 years ago from Atlanta where she was barber/beautician to many, including well-known dignitaries and their families. Special guests were Mari-Ann's daughter and son-in-law, Sonja and Gerald Thompson Jr.; and Rev. Russell Bruce, pastor of their church, Vesta Baptist. Near the conclusion of the dropin, Sonja Thompson read the poem very expressively, before her mother opened her many beautiful cards and other expressions of gratitude, including an angel throw made by Gloria Wheatley. Mari-Ann then expressed her love and gratitude to all who attended and had a part in making the day so special. Hostesses for this tribute to Mari- Ann for all she has meant, still means, to Rayle and surrounding communities were Gloria Wheatley, Christine Wheatley and Mildred Sisson. Adding to the variety of refreshments were the party foods brought by other former clients and good cooks of the area: Lisa and Amy McAvoy, Mablean Sherrer, Catherine Callaway, Gail Heard, Ann Walker, and Doris Walker. The flowers for the event were also enjoyed by others. The larger arrangement was given to Mari-Ann who had them taken to her church, County Line Baptist Church, for Sunday services. The smaller arrangement was used at Rehoboth Baptist Church where Christine Wheatley and Gloria Wheatley are members.
Good wishes go with Mari-Ann who is now living in Oglethorpe County, in a lovely and spacious suite which she had built onto her children's home in the Vesta community.
