Youth Apprenticeship Program comes to W-WCHS The Career, Technology, and Agriculture Education Department at W-WCHS has been granted the opportunity to add another program for the 2007-2008 school year. WWCHS is now participating in the CSRA-RESA Youth Apprenticeship program. The CSRA-RESA Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP) is a program of study that integrates school-based and work-based learning by collaborating with local business and industry. Apprentices have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, a post-secondary credential/diploma, and a certificateof occupational skills. Melvin Stewart, CSRA-RESA YAP coordinator, currently has apprentices enrolled from several local high schools including Evans, Greenbrier, Harlem, Lakeside, Columbia County, Glascock County Consolidated, Glascock County, and Lincoln County. W-WCHS will join these schools as part of the program. What is Youth Apprenticeship? YAP is a program designed to prepare highly motivated high school juniors and seniors for the high tech, high-skilled jobs in tomorrow's work-force. YAP involves school-based learning and work-based learning that provides students with competencies needed to begin a career in business or industry. Apprentices are required to continue their education after graduation from high school by attending a post-secondary institution. Who may apply? YAP applicants must be rising juniors or seniors, at least 16 years old with valid driver's licenses. Students must have a 2.5 GPA, have good conduct and attendance records, be on track towards graduation, and be recommended by two teachers and a counselor. Students will be required to take a series of courses related to their career plans and must agree to continue their education in technical school or through the college/university system. They must also be able to provide their own transportation from school to their work site. How do students apply? Applicants must complete an application packet and all required forms. How are apprentices selected? Applicants are screened by high school faculty members to ensure that qualificationcriteria are met. Recommendations are required from two teachers and a school counselor. Final selection is determined by the business and industry following their interview with the student. How can local businesses become a part of YAP?
Business and industries interested in providing work sites for WWCHS students are asked to contact Melvin Stewart at CSRA-RESA at 706-556-6225 or Lou Bentley, CTAE supervisor, at W-WCHS at 706-678-6887.
