Upcoming Miss Wilkes County Pageant will be fun event for girls

The upcoming Miss Wilkes County Pageant will be a fun event for the girls, organizer Ashley Barnett promises, with an ice cream social, maybe a pizza party, and more.

"This is an event where you and your friends can spend the day together and have a great time!" she said. "We want this to be a fun event and something the girls look forward to every year."

She says the girls she's talked to are really excited about the first pageant in Wilkes County in many years. "This is going to be a great time and a great opportunity for the girls in our community. We'll be having an ice cream social or pizza party at the rehearsal that Thursday night before the Pageant, and we're going to have fun!"

Girls do need to get their paperwork in as soon as possible to the Chamber of Commerce, she said. "The deadline is coming up on Thursday, September 20th, and we would love to have your information in as soon as you can get it to us."

There has been some confusion, Barnett said, about the "sponsor" on the contestant's fact sheet. "The sponsor is whoever paid the contestant's entry fee, whether it be the parents, grandparents, family, friends, a business, whoever. It does not mean you have to go out and get somebody to sponsor you. If your parents are paying, then they're your sponsor," she said.

Contestants for Miss Wilkes County and Little Miss Wilkes County will win crowns, sashes, and prizes, she said. There will be a winner and four runners-up in each division. The pageant is open to Wilkes County residents only.

Pageant officials will need a picture of every contestant for this award, separate from the one they use for the Photogenic contest.

Entry forms for Miss Wilkes County and Little Miss Wilkes County may be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce, The News- Reporter, Talk of the Town, Bee Southern, Sophie's, and Tena's Jewelry and Gifts.

The winner will make her first public appearance as Miss Wilkes County at the Mule Day Southern Heritage Festival in October.

Divisions for the pageant will be: Baby Miss 0-11 months; Toddler Miss 12-23 months; Tiny Miss, 2-3 years; Little Miss 4-6 years; Petite Miss 7-9 years; Deb Miss10-12 years; Teen Miss13-15 years; and Miss16-18 years old.

The attire 0-12 years will be Sunday dress only, Barnett said. Pageant dress is allowed for 13-18 years.

Entry fees for the pageant include the $25 mandatory beauty pageant fee. Optional competitions include Photogenic, Prettiest Smile, and Best Dressed, which are each $5 additional.

The pageant is sponsored by the Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce and is open only to Wilkes County residents. Contact Ashley Barnett 706-678-5111 or email misswilkescountypageant@ yahoo.com.

Admission will be $5 for adults, and $3 for children fiveand under.
