Tigers lose season opener to Warren County 33-13
The game started with a 12-yard kickoff return by Caleb Saggus out to the Washington-Wilkes 27-yard line. Two runs by tailback DeDe Stewart with an illegal procedure against the Tigers mixed in left Washington with third-and-six on its own 31-yard line. Quarterback A.J. Perlotte dropped back and fired a bullet to Saggus 15 yards down the field for a Tiger first down. Three plays later Perlotte found Saggus again, this time for 13 yards, giving W-W a first down on Warren County's 36-yard line. Alternating runs by Stewart and Perlotte gave the Tigers another first down at the Screaming Devil 26-yard line. Unfortunately for Washington the impressive 52-yard opening drive would come to an end. After runs by Stewart and fullback Drew Wilson, the Tigers fumbled the snap on third and fourth down, turning the ball over on downs at the Warren County 23-yard line. After an incomplete pass on first down, the Screaming Devils got their offense rolling. Warrenton gained a first down on its 34-yard line with two short runs, and then raced down the field with two back-to-back runs of over 20 yards. An illegal participation against the Tigers put Warren County inside the red zone on the W-W 17-yard line. The first quarter ended with Washington's defense tightening up under the shadow of the goal posts, keeping the Devils out of the end zone for seven consecutive plays.
Warren County started the second half with a 21-yard kickoff return to its 40-yard line. Three plays later the Devils were in the end zone again with a 23-yard touchdown run. The PAT was good increasing Warrenton's lead to 27-0 with 10:14 left in the third quarter. Saggus fielded the kickoff and returned it 24-yards to the W-W 30-yard line. Two penalties against Warren County helped the Tigers move down the field, along with a nine-yard run by Saggus and two runs by Stewart for a total of 14 yards. Washington made it down to the Screaming Devils' 17-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Warrenton started on its 20- yard line but quickly moved all the way down to the W-W 10-yard line with two quarterback keeps for a 70 yard total. The Tiger defense once again stood strong with its back to the end zone, stopping the Warren County running back for a 2-yard loss on fourth down. W-W moved the ball out to its 17-yard line with a 10-yard screen pass from Perlotte to Stewart. Perlotte's next pass, however, was intercepted at the Tigers' 43-yard line. The Devils quarterback ended the third quarter with a 24- yard run down to the Washington 19-yard line. Three plays later Warren County scored again. The Tigers blocked the extra point attempt to hold the score at 33-0 in favor of the Screaming Devils with 11:02 left in the fourth quarter. Saggus returned the kickoff 21 yards to the W-W 35-yard line, and then Eric Scott happened. Scott already had four carries in the game for a total of one yard. But in the fourth quarter he showed what he war really capable of. After receiving the handoff and exploding through the hole created by the offensive line, Scott outran the Warren County defense for 65 yards and the Tiger touchdown. The PAT was no good, leaving the score at 33-6, but Washington was on the board with 10:21 left in the game. The W-W defense fed off the momentum, forcing Warrenton to go three-and-out for the first time all night. After a 16-yard run by Deon Jackson down to the Warren County 23-yard line, the drive stalled, with Washington turning the ball over on downs. The Tiger defense forced another threeand out, with W-W getting the ball back after the punt on its 22-yard line. Washington's next drive consisted of just one play: a handoff to Scott. The offensive line once again did a great job creating a hole for Scott to run through, and that was all he needed, racing 77 yards for another W-W touchdown. This time the extra point was good, trimming Warren County's lead to 33-13 with 2:12 left in the fourth quarter. The Screaming Devils recovered the onside kick, but the defense got the ball right back for the Tigers, forcing a fumble on Warrenton's first play which Tyrance Ashmore recovered. Six-yard runs by Scott and Jones put Washington down at the Warren County 24-yard line, but an illegal procedure penalty on the Tigers stalled the drive with a few seconds left in the game. The Screaming Devils took-a-knee to seal the 33-13 victory. Despite only scoring 13 points, the Washington-Wilkes offense amassed a total of 262 yards, 224 yards on the ground and 38 yards in the air. Scott was the leading rusher with seven carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Stewart was next with 11 carries for 34 yards and then Jackson with three carries for 13 yards. Perlotte was four-foreight passing for 38 yards and had eight yards on the ground. Saggus was the leading receiver with two catches for 28 yards. He also had nine yards rushing and fivekickoff returns for 96 yards, giving Saggus a total of 133 all-purpose yards. The Tiger defense was led by cornerback Stewart with seven tackles and two assists. Next was defensive end Anthony Smith with fivetackles, four assists, and a sack, followed by linebacker Drew Wilson with four tackles and four assists. Freshman outside linebacker Jackson also had a solid start in his first varsity game.
This Friday the Tigers travel to the Brickyard to take on the Bulldogs of Thomson. Thomson won its first game of the season over Salem High School 21-0. The Bulldogs use a wing-T offense as they have every year head coach Luther Welsh has been there. Thomson is very fundamentally sound and has a junior fullback who rushed for over 200 yards in the win over Salem. Defensively the Bulldogs run a slant 50 and are led by two big, physical linebackers. The game will be another good opportunity for the Tigers to gain much needed experience before the start of the region schedule. Kickoff is at 7:30 in Thomson.
