Southern Fried Football Wow!!! College football fans who were fortunate enough to be among the 109,000 at the "Big House" in Ann Arbor, Michigan, witnessed the biggest upset in college football history last Saturday: Appalachian State 34 Michigan 32. Little App State, a power in Division 1-AA whipped the Michigan Wolverines who were ranked #5 in the Nation among Division 1-A schools. It was the first time that a 1-AA school has beaten a ranked 1-A school. Congratulations to Coach Moore and his fineMountaineer football team. Had it not been for the big upset in Ann Arbor, the Georgia Tech thrashing of Notre Dame in South Bend would have been the biggest news of the week. Let's take a look at the menu for the second week of the season. NC State at Boston College - After being upset by Central Florida in its opener the Wolfpack looks like a "weak sister" in the ACC. Boston College by 13. U.L. Monroe at Clemson - The Tigers are set to feast on a much weaker opponent this week after whipping FSU on Labor Day. Clemson by 24. UAB at Florida State - Ditto Florida State. FSU by 27. Duke at Virginia - The Cavaliers are woeful. The Blue Devils are even more woeful. Virginia by 14. Samford at Georgia Tech - The Yellow Jackets take a breather with 1-AA Samford. Hopefully for Tech, however, the team read the score of the App State - Michigan game. Georgia Tech by 32. Miami at Oklahoma - Remember when this would have been one of the biggest games of the season? It appears that Oklahoma has kept the pace while the talent level at Miami has dropped off. Oklahoma by 14. Virginia Tech at LSU - In the "Game Of The Week" the Hokies travel to Baton Rouge. LSU is looking for a running game and Virginia Tech is looking for a quarterback. It should be a titanic struggle, but the Bayou Bengals should prevail. LSU by 6. Nebraska at Wake Forest - Wake stumbled in the first week at Boston College. Nebraska is somewhat of a mystery, but they are always strong. Look for Wake to bounce back. Upset pick Wake Forest by 3 if starting quarterback is healthy. South Florida at Auburn - The boys from Tampa are dangerous. Auburn slipped by Kansas State in a great football game last Saturday night. The home field advantage should be enough. Auburn by 10. Alabama at Vanderbilt - Vandy Head Coach Bobby Johnson is laying a trap for the Red Elephants in Nashville. This one should go down to the wire, but Bama prevails. Alabama by 6. South Carolina at Georgia - Steve Spurrier gets a little "comeuppance" as the Dawgs roll over the Gamecocks in Athens. Georgia by 14. Mississippi State at Tulane - This may be one the Bulldogs can win. If they can't win this one, they're in deep, deep trouble. Mississippi State by 6.
Southern Miss at Tennessee - The Vols are licking their wounds from the tw0-touchdown defeat in Berkley last Saturday night. Southern Miss can be really tough, but a home crowd in excess of 100,000 should pull the Vols through. Tennessee by 13.
