Voters should be sure all is in order for eligibility to vote in next election Election day will be here before you know it and now is the time to make sure you are ready. If you have moved since you last voted you may need to contact the Voter Registrar's Officeat 706-678- 1850 to make sure you are listed in the correct precinct. Voters can be added and changes made until October 9, 2007. If you have married or divorced and need to change your name, you can pick up a new application at the Courthouse, Mary Willis Library, Wilkes County Health Department, or the Department of Family and Children Services. If you are a first time voter in Georgia, you may register in person or be sure to mail a copy of your photo identification(ID), a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address with your registration application. The Voter Photo ID law will be in force during the November 6, 2007, Municipal and Special Elections. When you go to the polls you will need to bring one of the following: l A Georgia driver's license (expired or unexpired); l A valid State ID card with photo; l A valid United States passport; l A valid employee ID card with photo issued by a government branch; l A valid military ID card with photo; or l A valid tribal ID card with photo. If you do not have one of these forms of photo identification,you THE LINCOLN may qualify for a free photo ID card from the Voter Registrar's officein Room 323 at the Wilkes County Courthouse or from the Department of Drivers Services in Thomson. You do not need a photo ID if you plan to vote by absentee ballot through the mail. It is not too soon to request an application for an absentee ballot through the mail. If you call, the registrar's officewill be glad to send you an application which will be held until the printed ballots are received. Remember that each application must be mailed in a separate envelope. Also, remember that there are new postal guidelines in effect and it is important that you use the correct amount of postage on your application for ballot and then on the ballot when you mail it after you have voted. There will be two elections running at the same time and you will need to request an application for absentee ballot for each election. Those in the city of Washington, Tignall and Rayle will be voting for candidates in each of these municipalities. Everyone in the county will be eligible to vote in the Special Election regarding SPLOST. The Wilkes County Board of Resistrars is available to help with any questions or concerns in Room 323 of the courthouse or at 706-678- 1850.
You will still be able to vote Absentee with a reason before Election Day and Advance through Friday before the election on Tuesday.
