THE ACADEMIC CORNER
GPEE Bus Tour participants to visit W-WES

When the GPEE Bus Trip participants visit Washington-Wilkes Elementary School on September 25, they will see that WWES follows the example set by the state of Georgia as it leads the country in the use of technology in education. As State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox has stated, "We are not only teaching our students about technology, we are using technology to teach our students."

Each school day begins with TEAM TV - a live broadcast produced completely by our students from our in-house television studio.

As classroom instruction begins,

teachers use Smartboards to enhance

learning through interactive websites

JOURNAL, Lincolnton, Georgia

that provide students with practice

opportunities on skills such as using a protractor to measure angles, designing simple machines and predicting the weather and then creating weather maps. In other classrooms, teachers select video clips from United Streaming to introduce information on topics such as statistics, graphing and content related to our reading series.

In our science labs, students create graphs through Excel using data collected from student surveys. Students learn about science concepts such as cell parts and the water cycle through interactive online programs. Student work displays might include travel brochures about Georgia landforms, "wanted posters" for harmful bacteria and digital photographs that teach good hygiene rules to our Pre-

Kindergartners.

In our math classrooms, teachers

begin their instruction in a total group setting using the Smartboard and then break into small needsbased groups for remediation, re- inforcement or acceleration using programs such as Accelerated Math, Destination Math or Georgia's Online Assessment System (OAS). Students work cooperatively at their laptops to solve problems such as how many sandwich combinations can be generated using a given menu of ingredients.

In our computer lab, students engage in a variety of curriculum-based instructional activities. Students are instructed in keyboarding skills and in the use of the OAS which provides practice opportunities for the CRCT. Destination Math and OAS are both accessible to students at home by use of a password provided by the school.

WWES is proud to have been selected for this year's bus tour. We want all of Georgia to know about the great things going on in our local schools and our community.
