Tigers lose to Thomson, brace for Lincoln encounter
By JOHN LOVVORN

DAN WYLIE GETS ONE OF HIS SIX TACKLES-FOR-LOSS He later recovered a fumble and ran it 75 yards for a touchdown.
Last Friday night the Washington- Wilkes Tigers lost to the Bulldogs of Thomson by a score of 34-6. The game was really a tale of two halves, with the Tigers only being outscored 7-6 in the second half. This is the third game in a row, including the jamboree, where W-W has played better in the second half than in the first.

The Tigers started the game on fire. Thomson got the ball first on its 38-yard line. The W-W defense forced the Bulldogs to go three-andout on their first possession of the game, with Washington starting on its 25-yard line after the punt. The Tigers started with an eight yard gain by Drew Wilson and a short pass from A.J. Perlotte to Caleb Saggus. Then Eric Scott got loose for a 55-yard run, getting hauled down just seven yards short of the end zone. However, a fumble on the next play recovered by Thomson ended Washington's promising drive. The Tiger defense started out strong again, but on third-and-five, the Bulldogs tailback broke free for an 89-yard run. Deon Jackson stopped him on the one-yard line. The next play Thomson scored, going ahead 7-0 with 6:11 left in the first quarter. W-W went three-and-out on its next drive, punting the ball down to the Bulldogs 44-yard line. Another long run by Thomson's tailback on second down put the Bulldogs on the Washington-Wilkes 10-yard line. The defense tightened up on the goal line, but on third-and-14, a controversial pass interference call against the Tigers moved the ball up to the five-yard line for Thomson. It took the Bulldogs two more plays to score, going up 14-0 with 1:23 left in the first quarter. The quarter ended with three plays for the Tigers for a total of fiveyards.

TIGER QB TEVERRIUS JONES LOOS FOR A RECEIVER He complete two passes for 12 yards against the Thomson Bulldogs.
A 34-yard punt by Teverrius Jones started the second quarter. The Bulldogs went three-and-out, as did Washington in the ensuing possession, with Thomson getting the ball back on the W-W 48-yard line. After a short gain on first down, a 21-yard pass followed by a 25-yard run put the Bulldogs in the end zone again. A missed PAT made the score 20-0 with 7:32 left in the second quarter. The Tigers again went three-and-out, punting the ball to the W-W 41-yard line. Thomson again drove down the field and scored, this time with a 13-yard pass to the tight end, increasing the Bulldogs' lead to 27-0 with 2:07 left in the half. Washington got the ball back in time to mount a small drive. The first half ended with a Jones pass being picked off by Thomson and run back 25-yards before being stopped.

The second half was a different story for the Tigers. After going three-and-out and giving the Bulldogs the ball on its 24-yard line, the W-W defense showed what it could do. The defense gave up only one yard to Thomson on four plays, forcing a turnover on downs. Jones started the next drive with a 13-yard run, but then the drive would stall, with Washington again punting to the Bulldogs. The Tiger defense forced Thomson to go three-and-out, but a fumbled punt gave the Bulldogs the ball back on the W-W 25-yard line. Dan Wylie fixed the problem though, stripping the Thomson ball carrier on second down and running 75 yards for the Tiger touchdown. The extra point was blocked, but the Bulldogs' lead was slimmed to 27-6 with 3:01 left in the third quarter. Thomson received the kick and gained nine yards before having to punt back to Washington. A pass from Jones to John Wylie for fiveyards ended the third quarter.

The Tigers punted three plays into the fourth quarter. Thomson scored in just three plays, giving the game its final score of 34-6 with 10:26 still left in the fourth quarter. Washington started its next drive on its own 25- yard line. Runs by Wilson and Jones moved the Tigers 37 yards down the field before turning the ball over on downs. The game ended with a 48- yard drive by the Bulldogs to run out the clock.

The Tiger offense gained a total of 135 yards against Thomson, 115 yards rushing and 20 yards passing. Scott was the leading rusher with eight carries for 68 yards. Next were Wilson and Jones with fivecarries each for 21 yards. Jones was also two for eight passing for 12 yards. Perlotte was three for four for eight yards. Wilson was the leading receiver with three catches for 13 yards. The W-W defense was led by Dan Wylie with 11 tackles, three assists, six tackles-for-loss, two caused fumbles, and one recovered fumble which he ran back for the Tigers only touchdown. Next was Anthony Smith with seven tackles, four assists, and half a sack. Washington's defense improved as the game went along, giving up half the yardage in the second half that it allowed in the first half.

This Friday night, the Washington Wilkes Tigers take on the Lincoln County Red Devils in the 378 War. The Red Devils are the two-time defending state champions in class A. They base out of a wing-T on offense and run multiple formations. On defense, the Devils base out of a fifty defense and feature three linemen that weigh over 280 lbs. and two outstanding linebackers. This is the Tigers last non-region game. Kickoff is at 7:30 in Tiger Stadium.
