Book Fair will raise funds for AR; Beta Club to help with golf tourney
Student volunteers, dubbed the "Crew," helped to plan the fair and will also help run it. Crew members are learning life skills while helping to make pleasure reading more acceptable and cool at their school. AR is a program designed to encourage reading and strengthen comprehension skills. Students earn rewards for points they accumulate when taking tests on the books they have read. The AR Lab has Tiger Paw bookmarks, pencil grippers, pencil toppers, pencils, and pens for sale, ranging from $.25 to $1.00. Shannon Thomason, AR Lab coordinator, is currently collecting cell phones and printer/ink cartridges for recycling. Washington-Wilkes Middle School is beginning a cookie dough fundraiser September 20. The fundraiser will end October 5, and all orders and money must be collected and turned in by this day. For every ten items a student sells, his or her name will be entered in a drawing to win a prize of $100. The more items the students sell the more chances they have of winning the prize from the drawing. The top homeroom from all three grades will enjoy a cookie party. The teacher of the top seller's class will win a $25 gift certificate. GLISI is a partnership devoted to the success of Georgia's educational leaders in meeting elevated expectations for student achievement and school performance. Last week, W-WMS teachers Michelle Smith and Nicole Bailey participated in Cohort 18 of Georgia's Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI). Cohort 18 consists of educators throughout Georgia that will work together to develop leadership and conduct research and analysis of school data. Last February, W-WMS administrators participated in Cohort 17, a group of school leaders from Wilkes County and other counties in Georgia. The Beta Club held its first meeting on Tuesday, September 11. The club discussed its involvement in the upcoming Nancy C. Long golf tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society. The members also made posters for its own fund-raiser for cancer research, "W-WMS Has a Heart." Students are asked to buy a heart, and write something on it. The hearts will be posted in the W-WMS lobby. It is a good cause, so we encourage everyone to buy a heart.
The W-WMS football team played a good game against Hancock in Sparta on September 12. We ran the ball well, but they kept us from scoring. Our defense went up against a hard Bulldog offense, but they spread us out and ran the ball down the field. Our next game is a home game against Elbert County. This game will take place September 20, with a pep rally to be held at the school, prior to the game. Hope to see you there. Go Tigers!!!
