Civil War Round Table will hear Willingham on Toombs, Stephens Skeet Willingham will present "Alexander Stephens and Robert Toombs, the Most Formidable Pair" at the Washington Civil War Round Table meeting on Monday evening, September 24 at 6 p.m. at The Jockey Club Restaurant on the Square in Washington. Claibourne Darden, Round Table President, says that the public is invited and welcomed. The cost of the meeting is $10 per person and includes a very nice dinner. Please make reservations, as soon as possible, by e-mail at claibourne@ darden-atlanta.net or by calling (404)210-5811 and leaving a message. Alexander Stephens of Crawfordville and Robert Toombs of Washington became the closest of friends early in their adult lives, Darden said. "Both were elected to the U.S Congress in the mid 1800's. No two men could have been farther apart in almost all ways, but together they became one of the most powerful influences in the U.S Congress." Stephens and Toombs have been given credit for averting a Civil War in 1850 with their passage of The Compromise of 1850. When the Confederate Government was finally formed in 1861 in Montgomery, Alabama, Stephens got the number two job as Vice President and Toombs got the number three job, Secretary of State. Toombs went on to become a brigadier general in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
Membership in the Washington Civil War Round Table is open to everyone, and new members can join at the meeting. Annual dues are $25 for individuals, $35 for a family and $15 for students.
