Bess Marie Collier and Matthew Justus Swantner exchange marriage vows on Saturday, August 18

Bess Marie Collier and Matthew Justus Swantner of Austin, Tex., were united in marriage in an impressive ceremony at the Lady Bird Johnson WildflowerCenter in Austin on Saturday, August 18, at seven o'clock in the evening. Dr. Keith Lamb of Kerrville, Tex., officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen W. Collier of Texarkana, Tex. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Larry Pogue of Houston, Tex., the late Mr. Pogue, and William Collier of San Antonio, Tex., and the late Mrs. Collier.

The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Swantner of Corpus Christi, Tex., and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Ray McAvoy of Washington, Mrs. Gloria Swantner and Mr. and Mrs. John Richard Swantner of Corpus Christi, Tex.

The scripture reader for the ceremony was Rev. Gloria Lear of the First United Methodist Church of Corpus Christi, Tex.

Daniel Joseph Swantner of Corpus Christi, Tex., brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Groomsmen were Christopher Jones of College Station, Tex., Jake Thomen of Austin, Tex., Jason Warner of New York City, N.Y., John William Fields of Houston, Tex., and Ward Collier of Annapolis, Md., brother of the bride.

Meredith Collier of College Station, Tex., sister of the bride, served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Laci Black of Houston, Tex., Emily Swantner of Dallas, Tex., sister of the bridegroom, Darcee Moerbe of Comfort, Tex., Andrea Moon and Kate Mailen of Seattle, Wash.

They wore periwinkle blue silk shantung gowns and carried fuchsia bouquets that included roses and Gerber daisies. Completing their ensembles were freshwater pearl necklaces and earrings, gifts from the bride.

Peyton Crenwelge of Comfort, Tex., was the flower girl. Her ivory silk dress was finished with a periwinkle blue sash.

Escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents, the bride was radiant in a gown worn by her mother on her wedding day in l979. The sleeveless gown was fashioned with an empire waist and front and back V-neckline. The bodice was covered in crocheted lace and the pleated chiffon skirt ended in a back train.

Her veil was ivory tulle with satin ribbon edging.

She carried a bouquet of ivory roses and hydrangeas.

Reception

Following the ceremony the bride's parents hosted a reception at the grounds of the Lady Bird Johnson WildflowerCenter.

A framed engagement picture of the couple was displayed at the reception and guests were invited to sign the mat.

Guests were invited to the butterfly garden for hors d'oeuvres before exploring the beautiful grounds. They returned to the courtyard for dinner and dancing.

Tables in the courtyard featured fuchsia runners, candles and fresh flowers.

The couple's wedding trip to Victoria House Ambergris Caye, Belize, was postponed until March, 2008, because of the unexpected arrival of Hurricane Dean in Central America.

Instead, Mr. and Mrs. Swantner enjoyed a week in Santa Barbara, Carmel and San Francisco, Calif.

They are making their home in Austin, Tex. The bride is a 2002 graduate of Comfort High School. She received her Bachelor of Environmental Design from Texas A&M in College Station in 2006 and is pursuing a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas in Austin. The bridegroom is a 2001 graduate of Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi and a 2005 graduate of the University of Texas where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. He will receive a J.D. from The University of Texas Law School in May 2008.

Attending the wedding from Washington-Wilkes were Mr. and Mrs. Marvin McAvoy, Virginia Fortson McAvoy and Laura Ellen McAvoy.

Bachelor Party

Michael Swantner and son, Daniel Swantner, hosted a Skeet Shoot and Barbecue honoring Matthew Swantner on Saturday morning, August 18, at the Capitol City Trap and Skeet in Austin, Tex.

Guests enjoyed shooting several rounds of skeet and were served a catered barbecue lunch.

The prospective bridegroom presented his groomsmen handmade monogrammed leather shotgun shell bags.

Bridal Luncheon

Emily Catherine Swantner entertained at a bridal luncheon honoring Bess Collier on Saturday, August 18, at the historical and majestic Victorian estate, Green Pastures Restaurant in Austin. The setting was the Burgundy Room with windows overlooking the lovely grounds.

Guests were served salad, grilled salmon on a bed of spinach, homemade rolls, iced tea and Texas Pecan Ball for dessert.

The hostess presented the brideelect a Waterford crystal heartshaped ring holder.

Twenty guests attended and special guests from Washington were Mrs. Marvin McAvoy, Virginia Fortson McAvoy and Laura Ellen McAvoy.

Rehearsal Dinner

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Swantner were hosts for a Texas barbecue rehearsal dinner honoring Matthew Swantner and Bess Collier on Friday evening, August 17, at Salt Lick Bar B Q Restaurant in the beautiful Austin, Texas, Hill Country setting.

Rev. Gloria Lear, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, and close friend of the bridegroom's family, gave the blessing.

Guests were welcomed by Michael Swantner and many toasts were given by friends and family.

The dinner was served family style. Tables held white cloths and glass vases of fresh wildflowers.The head table featured a Waterford crystal vase of yellow roses. This was presented to the bride-elect.

Ninety guests attended. Special guests included Mr. and Mrs. Marvin McAvoy, Virginia Fortson McAvoy and Laura Ellen McAvoy.
