Tea and Learn set Oct. 16 on topic of sickle cell disease

Wills Memorial Hospital will host a Tea and Learn on Tuesday, October 16, at 9:30 a.m. at the Senior Citizens Center on Marshall Street.

Linda Walker from the Shepeard Community Blood Center in Augusta will be the featured speaker. Her topic will be on sickle cell disease.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited disease that affects red blood cells. Sometimes these red blood cells become sickle shaped (crescent shaped) and have difficultypassing through small blood vessels.

When sickle shaped cells block the small blood vessels, tissue that does not receive a normal blood flowbecomes damaged. This is what causes the complications of sickle cell disease. There is currently no cure for this problem.
