State superintendent to visit Nov. 3; band, sports teams compete in events
By W-WMS SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS

W-WMS Corner
Kathy Cox, Georgia's State Superintendent of schools, visited W-WMS and W-WCHS on Wednesday, November 3. W-WMS received the 2007 Title I Distinguished School Award and W-WCHS received a Distinguished School Award. Wilkes County was one of many stops that Cox made while touring schools throughout the state of Georgia. Cox was impressed with the numerous awards that both schools have received, our high school graduation rate, and our student's achievement on standardized test measures.

The W-WMS softball team played great Saturday against Wilkinson County. They lost their first game 8-7. Amber Warren and Mallory Powell pitched the first game. However, they pulled together in their second game and made an amazing comeback. Hannah Ward pitched an amazing second game. They won their second game 16-3. Ashley Hearst, Mallory Powell,

and Amber Warren all hit triples. Most of the points that we gained were

The from stealing bases, because they made numerous errors. Our girls played

a terrific doubleheader.

The Washington Wilkes marching band won fourth place in the tenth annual Midland Valley Marching Competition. Sixteen bands were competing in several divisions. We were in Division AA. This was the first competition of the season but there are more opportunities to win later in the season. Two other festivals will take place this season, including The Georgia Mountain Marching Festival on October 13.

Last week our Middle School football team met with a tough Elbert County team. Our defense played hard allowing them only twenty-two points. Our offense ran and passed the ball well but they only allowed us eight points. This week we played Louisville. This was without doubt the best game we played all year. We played harder than ever before. Louisville won twelve to zero. Our next game will be on October 3, at 4:30 p.m., against Putnam County. During the halftime of this game all Eighth Grade Fall Athletes and Marching Band participants will be recognized along with their parents. Hope to see you there! Go Tigers!!!
